When in the Keys….

I must have Key Lime pie in the Florida Keys.

I mean I could have it elsewhere, but it just tastes better when I get it from the Keys. Any Key really, Islamorada, Key Largo, Key West I’m not picky.

There are some people who are purists, and demand their pies be made with a specific set of rules. Not me. Well okay, if I’m being honest..I just have 2 rules for myself:
?️Rule One – Must be made from Key Limes.
Key Lime Pie is not Key Lime Pie if it isn’t made from…Key Limes. Seems obvious right? I just want my Key Lime pie to be made with it’s namesake…it’s not like I’m asking for a Leprechaun and a pot of gold here…though the pot of gold would go nicely with a slice.
?️Rule Two – Must be eaten in the Florida Keys. (Sunglasses and Flipflops optional). Complete with Sunshine, tropical breeze and a few random chickens…crossing the road (I tried to ask the chickens why they were crossing the road …I got some stares).

Now I’ve had my fair share of Pies but there’s three that I think deserve a mention.

✔The Classic (Sweet Savannah’s- Marathon)

Your Quintessential Pie. Smooth, tart, just the right amount of sweet with a buttery crust. Topped with a little whipped cream, this is the kinda pie that you’d have with a cup of coffee, the kinda pie you’d crave, the kinda pie that hits the spot every single time. The pie lovers pie, the pie for all seasons, the pie’s pie…okay you get the point. To sum up, it’s the kinda pie that’s – Simply Delicious.

✔The Rebel (Islamorada Fish Company- Islamorada)

Attention Pie Purists -Stop Reading Now…and go eat some Pie!
It’s a Pie in a Cup. There…I said it…Pie in a Cup (I think that’s dirty talk for pie puritans). The filling has all of the qualities you’d want in a good Key Lime Pie but the big difference in taste comes from the crust. The crust contains nuts and spices and that really makes a big difference in the overall flavour. So yeah, it’s a Pie in a Cup – it’s Different and it’s Damned Good.

✔The Fluffy (Blue Heaven- Key West)

Crisp buttery crust, tart, sweet and creamy filling topped with sky high, fluffy, light as a cloud meringue. The meringue is sweet, but it’s not the type of sweet where you’d be woozy from sugar shock. However be forewarned, it’s served with a free side of girly giggles (yes, even if you’re a man) because it’s a pretty impressive, exciting looking pie. And as for the taste -all the layers meld perfectly making it a very memorable slice. This one is best enjoyed sitting outdoors with a cup of house brewed coffee and a view of a unicorn – Magical.

Whenever I’m in the Florida Keys, I must have Key Lime Pie, I must. I mean I could have it elsewhere, but…
